Final Entry for E-Journal

Final Entry for E-Journal

It has been a long journey to finally write the last entry for this e-journal for EDS 103. I must admit that I am not very good in Theories and I had a hard time understanding things in this subject. I had lapses in terms of writing the journals on time or even finishing the write ups most of the time. It has been hard trying to digest all the information in the reading materials, however, I had to do it and make sure that I at least understand or learn something from it.

The lack of motivation hits me right to the spot as I sometimes thought of not continuing this study. However, reading and noticing everyone trying to do their best in finishing the journals, it give me motivation what if they are able to do it, why can’t I? Reading the posts from my classmates made me think if how in the world they are able to do it? It came to mind that self-regulation exist to almost everyone.

I am challenged by my classmates to think about my views and my goals. I am inspired by their stories and their determination to finish this course. It has been a great journey and learning experience. When I enrolled in this class, I thought it is so easy since I have internet and all the resources online, however, when I am already working on the activities, I realized that I still have to think. Thoughts that is not answerable by the use of Google or Yahoo, and other search engines. I had to use my brain and all its knowledge to even answer a single question.

I can say that I have learned many things in this class. That will be confirmed once I have my final grades. I know I can be a better teacher given the chance that I am able to finish this course. Learning is a progress and I am riding that certain progress. I may not be the best student, however, I am trying my best to learn as much as possible and to pass all the class I am enrolled in.

Theoretical principles such as self-regulation got my attention. I thought I am a self-regulated person, but then, while I am reading through the processes and explanation, I am missing a lot. I thought I am self regulated, but then again, I was not able to finish or submit journals in a timely manner. A self regulated person is very responsible, reflecting back, I was lacking self-regulation.

Learning is progress and it will soon mean success!

I would say that Self-Regulation is the most important with all the behaviours in this course. One reason is that, in self-regulation, you are responsible for your own learning, success or failure. This entails setting your own goals without the need of someone telling you what to do. You are very independent in monitoring your learning, your actions and reflect on your own strategies in learning. You do not blame other people if in case you are unable to reach your intended goal since you should be responsible for everything. Teachers are here to guide but not to spoon-feed every student. Self-regulation is very important specially since the teachers in distance education do not really meet the students and tell them what to do. You are responsible even when no one is looking at you.

In a distance learning environment, such as this course, what particular behaviour do you think is the most important for learners to acquire? As a participant in this class, use social learning theories as basis to make recommendations on how students in distance learning can help other to acquire this behaviour.

Answer:  I would say that Self-Regulation is the most important with all the behaviours in this course.

Social learning theories is beneficial and can be recommended to students in distance education. You tend to be lazy when no one is telling you what to do in class. However, if you are able to observe every classmate you have by looking at their posts and responses on the forums, you will try to engage yourself and follow their footsteps. You learn from their posts and you try to send responses, whenever there is an answer to your responses or posts, you learn from them and the exchange of ideas is very beneficial in learning.

Reciprocal Interaction

In this 21st century that we are in, a lot of factors are affecting a childs learning. According to Bandura, each and every components play an important role.

Environment plays a very crucial role since we all know that experience is the best teacher someone experiences. When nature comes in, the environment or surroundings are the first few mediums wherein we learn something, whether it is good or bad. It is always a matter of observation. When a person or a learner see something done by someone who he/she respected, idolize, or fear about, will definitely either follow or do what that certain person he/she observed.

When it comes to behaviour, you always influence the people around you when on how you feel or what you feel. When you come in to class disturbed and being able to concentrate, it always followed by a seatmate of a friend getting disinterested with the class amd follow your emotions or behaviours towards the class. It is true that when someone has high regards to learning, he/she cannot be distracted very easily, however, with a negative attitude, it has a negative impact towards learning.

A “real world” scenario in a class: you come to school and you are so distracted by your propblems at home. The very first person who will notice your behaviour would be your seatmate or your friend. What will happen is that, once you told your friend about it, it is more likely that he/she will be affected and both of you will be distracted for the entire class or much worse, for the whole day.

Behavioral Theories

1. What are your predominant practices in your home with respect to reinforcing behaviors and modifying behaviors?

ANSWER. Premack principle is often used at home specially to my nephews and nieces. As discussed in the module that the premack principle is a useful strategy to organize and get tasks done according to priority (Slavin, 2006). For example my nephews and nieces are told to eat their food so then can go out and play. This type of reinforcement is rewarding to them since they are able to play after eating. Another example of predominant practices is rewarding family members for something good they have done. Another example of this would be rewarding my nephews when when finish their homework. A few rewards they get when they finish their homework would be extra playtime, they get goodies such as popsicles, specially during the summertime. This type of reinforcement falls under the Positive Reinforcement because it involves addition of something to increase their interest to learn or do their homework. Negative reinforcement is also common at home. Household tasks are lessen if my sister was able to get high grades for her quizzes. An example of this is that, instead of her cleaning the kitchen for the week, I will normally ask her to get good grades at school and I will clean the kitchen. This is negative reinforcement in a way that, I am decreasing the task she has to do if she studies better and get good grades.

2. How would you prefer behaviors regulated at home or in school?

ANSWER. At home, there are certain behaviors that needs to controlled. There are more undesirable behaviors that my nephews and nieces possesses than the desirable ones. They do not behave very badly however, they need more supervision and constant reminder in order for them to behave nicely. An example of this is when they eat their food and normally, they mess up so much it drives their mother (my sisters, or brothers) crazy. They are often told that if they do not eat their food properly, they are more likely to have less playtime which is a form of punishment. I understand that the reason why that is being done is that, they need to behave desirably, however, I would prefer if my sisters or brother will approach them in a different way. An example would be showing them how to do it and repeat the process until they get to the proper way of feeding themselves. They are no longer that young, they are at least 1st grade to 3rd grade which to my understanding should be able to behave very well. I would suggest that training would be more appropriate than punishment. As what was mentioned on module 6, punishment should be the last resort.

1. Am I a self-regulated learner?

Answer. Self-regulation means being personally responsible for their own success or failure. It entails setting a goal, and then strategically planning action, controlling and monitoring one’s of thoughts, feelings, behaviours in a cyclical process towards the achievement of the goal. Therefore, I may say that I am somewhat a self-regulated learner. I am personally responsible for my own success and failure. However, there were some instances that I am very dependent with what the teacher is teaching and rely on the reading materials provided. A self-regulated person strategically plan action towards achieving goals. I sometimes fail to follow my strategies and get lost along the way. learning these things like self-regulation helped me reflect and should consider planning and performing what I planned to do for the betterment of my learning.

2. Why can’t I think like an expert?

Answer. I would not say I do not have expertise. I am expert with some things that I normally do everyday. Let me put my sales job as an example. I am said to be an expert with what I do based on the number of sales I am able to do every months. I have been awarded as the sales person of the month for several months. One of the reason why I became expert with sales is because of my experiences and training I have attended several years back. As a sales expert, you have to understand the process or what the customers are thinking towards something that you are selling. I am not an expert learner because I need more experiences with the subjects I am taking. I can be an expert, maybe, in the near future if I continue to study more and try to find ways on how to learn better.

3. Will my participation in forum discussions will facilitate the transfer of my learning?

Answer. Transfer of learning pertains to the application previously learned in a new context. Participating in the forum discussions will definitely facilitate transfer of learning because not everyone in the forum has the same idea as you have and this will help them learn something from you which they may apply in their daily lives.

Theories of Intelligence

  1. What strategies do you use to learn? How do you know how well you have learned; what are your indicators of learning? According to your learning strategies, where do you (in practice) seem to stand in the nature-nurture debate?

One of the strategies I use to learn is reading as much as many references and trying to see what are the similarities and the differences among those references. After collecting all the data needed, I have to weigh them in and see which is the most accurate and use if for the final output. Most of the time, I read either before bedtime of during the first hours that I wake up. I find it easier to focus when I am starting my day in the morning since my mind is still free from any worries or stress for the day. It is easier for me to study when there is a quite place and the place is conducive. My room with an instrumental sound or no sound at all works for me. It is very important that I am ready with the resources and I tend to lose interest when something is not working right like an interrupted internet connection. I try to get away with social networking apps running in the background so that my attention is fully on the studies I am working on. Most of the time, I try to test what I have learned by going through the questions at the end of the lesson and answering them without looking at my materials. I will find out that I have learned something or not if I am able to answer it on my own and checking my materials afterwards if my answer match or even close to the one on the printed materials/references.

In the sense of nature-nurture intelligence debate, I can tell that I actually believe both ways in a sense that I am dependant on nature where I learn better like the classroom or the environment. In the nurture side, my family does not have academic achievements as a pattern; however, I am able to achieve a degree wherein not everyone in my family was able to do. In that case, I think I am able to nurture myself with intelligence that does not sun in my genes.

Discuss your own perspective about intelligence. In this light, address the following questions:

  • How have your personal views about intelligence affected the way you approach learning?
  • What are your ideas about the way teaching or testing can be done best?

As a learner, knowing these various types of intelligence helps me figure out what are my strengths and my weaknesses. Knowing my strength will help me use them to improve my weaknesses. Since I am aware what intelligences that need improvements, I will use my strength and apply or at least find out how to deal with my weaknesses with the use of the intelligence I have if applicable. An example of strength I have is Linguistic Intelligence and I one of my weaknesses is Bodily-kinaesthetic intelligence.

I will use my linguistic intelligence and communicate with my teacher and ask him/her to explain what I would have to do to improve my kinaesthetic abilities.

Testing can be done in many ways. If you want to test the intelligence of a person, for example, if you want to test the analytical ability of a student, then you will have to give problems that require analytical problems and see how he is able to answer it.

Best way of teaching is getting the students to engage themselves with their learning process because they direct their own learning; they are in the position to use their strength to learn as efficient as possible. Different students have difference levels of intelligences therefore different strategies may apply. You have to find out what are the strategies that best suites the students learning intelligence. Sometimes, it will be useful to group students ideally with different type’s intelligences so that they could learn from each other.

Are there ways in which you have already experienced multiple intelligence approaches in school, either with or without realizing it?

Yes, I am able to experience it when I am in the primary school and in the university. The type of intelligence is a bit more of dynamic in terms of when it happened and what level I was. When I was in primary school, normally we sing the letters of the alphabet to remember it. That type of intelligence falls primarily in musical intelligence however, it helped me improved my linguistic intelligence. When I had to do Physical Education class, it falls in bodily-kinaesthetic. It is amazing now that I try to go back with my schooling years, and seems to have these approaches were already used without me knowing it.

How can you design your own learning (in your present courses) so that you can tap your multiple intelligences?

The best way to design it is to know what are my weaknesses and strengths. Then designing learning strategies where I can compensate my weaknesses with my strength. This entails what intelligence I need for a specific learning task.
